Bayer MaterialScience has implemented a rigorous, four-stage process to prioritize, characterize, manage and communicate the potential risks involved with each of the company's products. Essential functions and activities of the product safety assessment and management process include:
Product Prioritization
Products or product categories are prioritized for Product Safety Assessments based on:
- Regulatory requirements
- Hazard and exposure considerations
- Other considerations (ex. voluntary industry programs)
"Stand alone" criteria such as regulations may place a product at high priority for assessment. Products that do no meet stand alone criteria are prioritized based on additional "combination criteria," such as potential exposure considerations.
Risk Characterization
After prioritization, the potential risks of each product are evaluated and characterized:
- Hazard Evaluation x Exposure Evaluation = Risk Characterization
Risk Management
Based on the outcome of hazard and exposure evaluations, BMS will implement appropriate risk management measures.
Risk Communication
To communicate the potential risks identified for each product or group of products, Bayer MaterialScience develops a variety of safe handling information resources. These resources may include:
- Product Safety Summaries
- Safe handling guidance documents
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
