Risk Characterization Process
Risk characterization is a process undertaken by Bayer MaterialScience to identify and evaluate potential hazards and exposure risks for each product. The steps taken in this process include:
Hazard Evaluation
- Collect and evaluate toxicological information
- Evaluate health hazards
- Evaluate physical hazards
Exposure Evaluation
Potential risks from exposure are evaluated for product use, handling and disposal activities. BMS endeavors to consider all environmental and operational variables when performing such evaluations:
- Equipment used
- Process temperatures
- Potential exposure methods (e.g. skin contact, inhalation, etc.)
In an attempt to collect information that is as accurate as possible, BMS may contact customers using a particular product to learn more about the specific conditions under which a product will be used. Commercial and/or consumer use of the product is also considered:
- Engineering controls
- Personal protective equipment
- Potential for spill and/or environmental release
- Guidelines, exposure limits, and applicable regulations for specific products/chemicals
